Increase in Hail Drives Up Insurance Rates in Texas

Texas Hail Increases Insurance Premium

Texas Hail Increases Insurance Premium

Texas homeowners have seen a major spike in home insurance premiums, largely due to unpredictable weather, including an increase in hail events.

Insurance rates have been affected nationwide due to the strong weather disasters that have occurred in the United States recently, such as destructive tornadoes, large hurricanes, and wildfires. Insurers are increasingly worried about hail as one of these weather hazards.

What areas are being hit the hardest by hail? According to an Insurify analysis of NOAA and FEMA data to determine which states have been hit the hardest, Texas ranked as one of the highest.

Fourth Highest Increase in Country

From 2022 to 2024, the number of big hail events in Texas increased by 93%, which was the fourth-highest increase in the United States. Hail events measuring 2 inches or more increased by 160% in Texas during the same time period. Dallas was the city in Texas most vulnerable to severe hailstorms in 2024, with 878 occurrences.

With an average premium of $4,789 per year, 85% more than the national average of $2,584, Texans also pay the fourth-highest rates for homeowner's insurance in the United States.
