Texas Amongst One of the Most Targeted States for Cargo Theft During the Holidays

'Tis the season to be vigilant or at least aware of increased cargo theft. On Thursday, CargoNet, a Verisk Analytics company and leader in cargo theft prevention and recovery, revealed that a review of holiday-period theft data from the past five years shows a trend of increased risk in the days before and following Christmas.

Verisk's study of 261 theft instances between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2 during the past five years reveals Dec. 27–29 as peak days for criminal activity, with an average of 31 reported events each day.

Verisk claims that the "increasing sophistication" of cargo theft activities has helped to a consistent increase in holiday season events. The holiday seasons for 2019–2021 averaged 43 events annually; in 2022 and 2023, they jumped to 59 and 73, respectively. Based on present patterns, this increasing trend seems to last until the Christmas season 2024.

Still, the states most targeted for cargo theft are California, Texas, and Florida. The survey ranks Shelby County, Tennessee, first at the county level; Dallas County, Texas, second; San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties in California third.

How Might Business Owners Fight Cargo Theft?

Businesses are seriously threatened by cargo theft, which disrupts supply chains, causes financial losses, and even damages brand names. Proactive steps taken by business owners help to reduce these hazards.

Invest in Technology

Using geofencing and GPS tracking on delivery and cargo vehicles will help to continuously monitor shipments. Another degree of protection comes from video monitoring loading ports and warehouses.

Boost Physical Safety

Safe sites with gates, fences, and access control mechanisms. Locking containers, lorries, and trailers helps discourage theft. Protecting products in transportation depends critically on parking in well-lit, safe areas.

Train Employees

Staff members should be taught to follow set procedures, guard shipments, and spot questionable activities. Drivers should always secure doors and avoid leaving vehicles alone for long lengths of time.

Work With Industry Partners

Consolidating information regarding theft trends and linking cargo security systems helps to boost group defenses. Develop rapport with law enforcement and apply their tools to improve security.

Perform Analyses of Risks

Check supply chain vulnerabilities often. When at all feasible, avoid high-theft zones and apply safe routing. Combining technology, physical security, and training helps company owners lower cargo theft risks, protect assets, and keep operational continuity.
