We found mold while repainting our cabinets, and we had to rip out one of them because the countertop was loose, and we needed to reattach it so we could continue to sand, prime, and paint them. We cleaned it up, went into the wall, and replaced the drywall enough to feel confident that it was taken care of. The next project was a new floor, and we were taking up carpet in the area behind the kitchen when we discovered mold damage throughout the wall, which was beyond our capacity to handle, so we filed an insurance claim. They sent a "Code Blue" company to assess the damage and provide an estimate, which went well at first. Because there was no water leaking, determining the source of the mold was challenging. The contractor who came out thought it might be the pipes beneath the sink because they were damp, but there was no standing water on the cabinet floor. He walked us through the procedure and said we'd hear from the claims adjuster in the next day or so. They did not call us after four business days, including a Sunday. I called and left three messages before getting a call back from someone who apologized and said she would assist us. She checked through her system and said she would take care of us. She also stated that she would compile all of the information required from the estimate and contact us. When she returned our phone, she stated that they are leaning toward a denial because the water appears to have been sitting for weeks, which they do not cover. I explained that we had no idea and that the mold was hidden where we wouldn't normally see it unless we dismantled the entire cabinet. And it didn't matter to them that there was a clause in our policy that said that standing water damage that was not repaired was not covered. RIGHT NOW... Our kitchen had a leak that warped the entire back wall behind our cabinets and nearly wrecked all of our cabinets, and it now appears that we will be refused. The field adjuster was called out next, and he was perplexed by our experience thus far. She took her pictures and told me not to worry about the lady at the office since she wouldn't be able to see without them and that she would make sure we were covered. That alleviated some of the burdens. We also had a plumber come out to fix the basket strainer, who recommended getting a second assessment from another restoration business. They were shocked that nothing had been done to minimize the mold thus far. They left their HEPA filter and a fan as a kindness to us and instructed us to phone them if we needed assistance. (Kudos to Bingham Restoration) So we got snuck between the cracks once more, and they dropped the ball AGAIN!!! I had assumed that we had purchased insurance to safeguard us if something occurred. I'm afraid not!! Read your insurance carefully, and don't decide until you know what they will cover.
