Texas City Tornado

A tornado swept through a portion of a city in suburban Houston, which resulted in the displacement of between 500-1000 residents from a damaged apartment complex.

The storm struck Texas City at 6 P. M. on January 6, injuring residents of a 129-unit apartment complex, emergency management coordinator Tom Munoz said.

Nearby convenience stores, schools, and other buildings sustained damage. Schools have been canceled for Thursday.

Few injuries were incident.

The National Weather Service reported the tornado caused significant damage; wind speeds were ranged between 86-110 miles per hour.

Of the sixteen families displaced by the storm, sixteen spent the night at a hotel.

However, after inspectors reviewed the apartment complex on January 7, authorities found that the building was unsafe, and all of the occupants were evacuated.

The American Red Cross and the United Way launched outreach programs to find temporary accommodation for homeless people. It is not known when the residents will be able to return to their homes.

Weather forecasters predict that it's not uncommon for tornadoes to form in winter.

Most intense tornadoes are in the winter, he said.
