What is Actual Cash Value or ACV?
ACV is the amount of depreciation above the original cost. Depreciation is a percentage of an item's life, and how much of that life remains. The additional percentage times the replacement cost equals the replacement value. For example, your television destroyed in a house fire five years ago cost $2,000. The insurance company determines that all TVs serve a useful purpose for ten years. Today, a similar television is $2,500. The tv had 50% (5 years) of its life remaining before it was destroyed. The ACV equals
Since the value is $2,500, the useful life remaining is 50% ($1,250).
What is Replacement cost value or RCV?
RCV is the cost of replacement for a specific item or property. It may not calculate the item's value using the market value method and deducting for depreciation. If some burglar steals your six-year-old television, what happens to it? With actual cash value coverage, you only get what your television would sell for six years old. Replacement cost coverage addresses the cost to replace your TV set with a new one.
What is market value?
Market value is the value of the fair market size. Replacement value differs from replacement cost. The replacement value represents how much the insurance company will pay to replace the home. For example, if you bought a house in a depressed market, and then it burned down, it may take $275,000 in building materials and labor costs to replace that. The house's market value is $200,000, but you would want to insure it for $275,000 to replace it once the current market value drops.
What is stated value coverage?
Stated value coverage pays the lesser of the cost to repair an insured item or the item's fair market value. Depending on the policy you purchase, your items such as furniture, clothing, appliances, lawnmower, tools, etc., are covered. If a statement values $100,000, it is deemed correct. However, if an insurance loss was experienced, you will have to prove a loss, and the insurance company will undoubtedly contest your figures.
What is a salvageable condition?
This condition gives the insurance company the power to settle the claim without establishing the actual loss amount. By selling the salvaged property, the insurance company can lower the cost of the claim.
For example, if your car is totaled in an accident, The insurance company declared your vehicle totaled. After paying the claim, the car is sold to a commercial salvage company. The proceeds from the sale will cover the amount of money owed.
What is adverse selection?
One of the functions of the underwriting department is to protect the insurer from adverse selection. An adverse selection suggests that low risks have a greater likelihood of purchasing health insurance than the average risk. When someone has cancer, they may want to buy a cancer policy to pay for treatment. If you have a severe disease such as melanoma, your doctor may recommend that you purchase additional life insurance. In these cases, the insurance company would not sell a policy to the person for obvious reasons. Healthier people tend to delay purchasing insurance coverage and tend to shop less often.
