What is Fake News?

"Fake news" has come to mean different things to different people.

At its heart, we describe "fake news" as the false news stories: the story itself is fabricated without verifiable evidence, sources, or quotes. Sometimes these articles may be propaganda intended to confuse the reader or crafted as "clickbait" written for economic rewards (the writer benefits from the number of people who click on the story). In recent years, fake news stories have proliferated via social media, partly because online sharing is quick and straightforward.

Why Southeast Texas Record is Fake News

David Yates, who also blogs for Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR), pretends to be a fair and impartial journalist, although his stories are anti-lawyer and anti-justice. What is more troubling is that David Yates is clearly on the payroll of super-lobbyist group TLR.

SETexasRecord has a Long History of Attacking Plaintiff Attorneys.

On Interstate 10, east of Houston, refineries and chemical plants extend for miles. These plants serve many good-paid, working-class jobs — and plenty of harmful air pollution to go with.

Over the past 70 years, industrial production has made Texas coast one of the country's most litigious areas. The U.S. last month, the Chamber of Commerce started a newspaper in Beaumont, Texas. The paper focuses solely on civil litigation.

Beaumont lawyer Brent Coon was in the midst of a lawsuit involving a worker who died of mesothelioma, cancer commonly caused by asbestos exposure. Coon's lawyers say they saw someone inside the courthouse with a brand newspaper stack, The Southeast Texas Record.

The essence of the articles on this new paper's front page caused Coon some irritation.

Coons explains back in 2007 that SETexasRecord.com is a propaganda sheet. Then, the front page had a great article about tort tax. They had a big article about how everybody pays more for something due to personal injury cases granting damages.

This isn't the reading Coon wants jurors or prospective jurors to peruse while they wait to be called to trial, or recess when determining a civil case. He says the primary object of the newspaper is political.

Why would they produce a newspaper give it away for free? SouthEastTexasRecord does it because they realize they're putting out this message: 'Lawsuits are bad; there are frivolous lawsuits; the jury system has gone amok and has to be fixed.'

Do you like being lied to?

Basically, South East Texas Record is being paid by insurance companies to trick consumers. As you hear their dishonestly repeatedly, the more they say it and the more they express the message, the more likely the public will believe it.

Reaction to the situation varies by political affiliation. Conservatives would applaud it, seeing someone trying to print the facts about Beaumont civil litigation. Liberals may be outraged, seeing a crass effort to manipulate, if not cheat, the jury pool, slickly disguised as a mainstream newspaper.
