What is Ameriprise, exactly?

In 1894, Ameriprise was founded as Investors Syndicate in Minneapolis, with 1000 investors each putting in $5. After surviving the Great Depression, the company reached a valuation of $100 million in 1937. Three years later, the company entered the mutual fund market, and over the next decade, they continued to diversify their investment options. In 1949, the company changed its name to Investors Diversified Services (IDS).

Investors Syndicate Life Insurance and Annuity Company was founded in 1957, marking its first foray into the insurance market. IDS Life was later added to the company name to match the main name.

IDS was acquired by American Express Corporation in a $780 million deal in 1984, as the company celebrated its 100th anniversary; ten years later, the company's assets had grown to $100 billion.

In 1995, the company changed its name to American Express Financial Advisors (AEFA). The company did not go public until 2005, and it did so under a new name: Ameriprise Financial. Several acquisitions occurred in the 2000s, including H&R Block Financial Advisors, culminating in the 2010 acquisition of Columbia Management, which placed Ameriprise among the top ten largest mutual fund managers in the country.

Ameriprise was ranked 259 on the Fortune 500 list in 2018. Their headquarters are still in Minneapolis, but their products are sold through local financial advisors worldwide.

Ameriprise now sells personal insurance products, such as auto, home, and life insurance, as well as disability and long-term care options, in addition to a wide range of investment options. They collaborate with Costco to provide members with exclusive benefits and discounts on home and auto insurance. Ameriprise offers both full pay and monthly installment plans, with the monthly option including Payment Holiday. This divides your six-month policy's installments into five monthly payments, leaving you with a payment-free sixth month. It's a little gimmicky, but it might be nice if the sixth month falls in December when many people's budgets are stretched thin. Keep in mind that you will still be paying the same total amount, so you will not be saving anything.

Homeowners' Insurance

Standard homeowners, condos, and renters insurance are also available through Ameriprise's home insurance program.

The home insurance package policy, like the auto program, covers all of the usual bases – dwelling, other structures, liability, and personal property. Various endorsements, such as high-value personal property riders and water and sewer backup, can be added to the policy for additional coverage.

Ameriprise includes some benefits with every policy, similar to the auto program, that would normally be considered add-ons at other companies. Homeowner's insurance policies include the following features at no additional cost:

There are several homeowner discounts available, including discounts for having an existing Ameriprise Financial Advisor relationship. There is also a discount for Costco members and a list of the usual common discounts, such as safety features and discounts based on the age of the home.

The Payment Holiday program is also available for homeowner's insurance, though it is a 12-month policy in this case, so payments are split into 11 installments with one month off.

All of the same benefits are available on the renter's insurance program, which is great to see because renters don't always get the same treatment from insurance companies as homeowners.

Insurance for life

Depending on your needs, life insurance products are available directly through Ameriprise's RiverSource plans or other partner companies.

RiverSource is an Ameriprise brand name that offers various life insurance products; we were directed to that company's website to look at those products.

Term life insurance, universal life insurance, and variable universal life insurance are all available. There isn't a lot of information about the various policies available.

Term life insurance is available in 10, 15, 20, and 30-year terms. The website does not provide information on the issue age of the policy, nor does it list the minimum and maximum death benefit amounts. The policies can be converted to long-term insurance.

Universal Life is available in four different configurations:

Foundations Protector is a traditional universal life insurance policy that includes a cash accumulation account and a no-lapse guarantee.

Foundations Universal Life has a guaranteed death benefit and a cash account with a guaranteed minimum and a fixed rate of return. There is a 15-year no-lapse guarantee on this policy.

Succession Protector is a life insurance policy covering two people on the same policy and pays out when the second person dies.

Indexed Universal Life is available with various indexes to which the cash accumulation account's growth is linked. It's also available as a survivor's policy.

Variable Universal Life can be purchased as a standalone policy or as part of a succession plan. These versatile policies provide a guaranteed death benefit as well as tax-deferred growth on the accumulation account. In certain circumstances, income tax-free access to the account is possible, and growth may be linked to the stock market.

Additional Personal Insurance

Ameriprise writes umbrella insurance policies in addition to home and auto insurance to cover liability that extends beyond those policies. These policies can be combined with auto and home insurance to get a multi-policy discount.

Through a partnership with other specialty insurance companies, additional personal insurance products are available. Ameriprise does not insure these or handle any claims related to them. They only offer what amounts to a referral, which is standard procedure.

Health Care Coverage

On their website, Ameriprise offers various health insurance options, including major medical and supplemental insurance.

Individual major medical insurance is listed as a product, but little information is available, including whether Ameriprise underwrites these policies directly. Is the Price a Good Deal?

A 10-year term policy with a face value of $100,000 will cost $13.21 per month. This same policy will cost $22.75 per month after 30 years.

We also ran a $1 million quote. The monthly payment for a 10-year term was $39.81, and for a 30-year term, it was $95.81.

These are extremely competitive rates, especially for the $1 million policy.

Ameriprise isn't the type of company we'd expect to offer online quoting, but even the big financial services firms have been adding this feature in recent years, and we're glad to see it. Even compared to some of the largest life insurance companies, Ameriprise's term life insurance rates are very competitive.

Even without the company's many discounts, the auto insurance rate we received was below average.

Is it easy to file a claim?

The company's online claims filing service can be used to report auto claims with no injuries.

In the event of an injury claim, the company should be contacted via toll-free phone at 800-872-5246. All other claims, such as auto glass, theft, roadside assistance, and all home claims, can be made with the same number.

Like the home claims process, the auto claims process is fairly standard and well documented on the website. Customers can choose from a network of preferred repair services, but they are free to use any repair service they want.

We could not locate information about filing life insurance claims despite a thorough search of both the Ameriprise and RiverSource websites. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, and we hope that in the future, more life insurance companies – particularly those that are also financial service companies, as they are more likely to fail to provide claims information – will address this. The last thing a bereaved person needs is to have trouble locating information about their claim.

Are the customer feedback and ratings positive?

Ameriprise has two BBB pages, one for financial services and the other for Ameriprise Home & Auto.

Ameriprise Financial Services has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, with only 38 customer service complaints in the last three years. Ameriprise Home & Auto has an A+ rating and has received more customer service complaints than any other company – 202 in the last three years, 56 of which were resolved in the last year. It's not surprising that the home and auto insurance side of the business receives more complaints, as that type of policy is more prone to claims and billing issues. Nonetheless, the number of complaints is relatively low.

Ameriprise has 282 reviews on Consumer Affairs, including financial services and auto and home. Still, a quick look through the customer service complaints reveals that most of them are about auto and home. The overall star rating is slightly higher than one star, based on 51-star ratings submitted in the previous year, 45 of which are one-star ratings. The majority of complaints are about claim denials, but there are also some complaints about handling financial accounts.

A company of Ameriprise's size is bound to have some complaints, but the number of complaints we found isn't particularly high. The California Department of Insurance conducts studies on the number of valid complaints filed against auto insurance companies. Still, Ameriprise does not appear on the list, most likely because it does not have a large enough market share in that state.

So, what's the bottom line here?

Ameriprise has a wide range of products, but its insurance division is dominated by the big three. They have a good auto program, with reasonable rates and various discounts, particularly if you are a Costco member and purchase your insurance through their affiliate program or if you already have an Ameriprise financial account. The company is financially sound and has a long history, and while there have been some complaints, the volume is low for the company's size, and there are no major red flags. When comparing rates and policies, Ameriprise is definitely worth considering.
