Documenting Your Loss
If the insured was prudent and prepared, before the loss, an inventory of the contents or a photograph of the contents, the insured should provide the insured with a list and photograph or videotape. The insured and the adjuster should work on photography, video, and inventory of all damaged property after the loss. The insured should ensure that the date of the photos and the tape is recorded. It is essential to document the source and extent of the damage, whether caused by fire or water intrusion. If your photos or videos are electronic, be sure to store them off-site, in the cloud, or with entities like DropBox, Box.com, etc.
In most states, a material misappropriation, concealment, or omission connected with the claim shall give the insurer a valid reason to reject the entire request. For example, the allegation that an item was destroyed that did not really or substantially overstate the damaged item's value is a fraud. In most states, insurance fraud is a felony that can place the insured in state prison if convicted, in addition to losing the right to collect a claim. No loss is so bad that the insured attempts to defraud the insurer to make up for uninsured or underinsured losses. The insured should never exaggerate, speculate, or conjecture any particular piece of property's loss of value.
Demonstrate to the insurer when the recollection may not be accurate when the insurer and the insured estimate the matter, the basis for the insured's estimate. For the value of items, the insured is not sure about the claim's presentation, Appropriate to use the phrase "To Be Determined." Suppose the insured does not have receipts to show the item's price. In that case, information can be found in catalogs, statements from retailers, bank statements, credit card statements, family members or friends, GOOGLE, Bing.com, Amazon.com, or other internet sources. If everything else fails, a formal assessment may be obtained from a professional personal property appraiser. Save this as a last resort, as the insurer will usually refuse to reimburse the insured for the costs of hiring an appraiser. However, if the insurer considers it necessary as the only way to value the property, the insured may hire one at no cost.
